Trauma-informed practice began in mental health care as a way to acknowledge the role that trauma can play in a person’s decisions, reactions, and life course. The goal of trauma-informed practice is to create a safe environment that (a) avoids re-traumatizing people and (b) removes barriers that people who’ve experienced trauma might encounter.

Being able to convey information clearly and succinctly is an essential skill for editors, especially those who work on documents for the public. In legal, medical, and emergency situations, having clear communication may be a matter of life or death.

Imagine my trepidation, then, when asked to participate in the selection of the 2019 Karen Virag Award recipient. I can barely manage to choose what to eat—how was I going to help select an award recipient?

Iva Cheung, a certified editing professional and member of Editors BC, spoke to a room full of eager participants at Editors BC’s January 2018 meeting. Her presentation topic was editing for accessibility. While editors live in a world of nuances and judgment calls, Iva re-affirmed that it is always a good idea to use the basic principles of plain language to remove communication barriers for people with disabilities.

Almost 14% of Canadians report being limited in their daily activities by a disability, and 10% of Canadians have print disabilities that affect how they are able to interact with and understand text. If you edit anything for the general public, you are editing for people with disabilities. In this reprise of her session at Editors Canada’s 2017 conference, Iva Cheung will offer concrete steps you can take to make the communications you work on as accessible as possible.
