As well as being vital for comic books, well edited lettering also conveys meaning in any visual medium. Whether you’re interested in a career in comic book editing or expanding your graphic-editing skills for the growing demand of online content—or are simply a fan of comics—this seminar introduces concepts of visual style beyond the traditional editing style guides.
Welcome to Editors BC’s new season! The 2025–2026 exec experienced unexpected changes since the AGM announcing that all board members were returning. We will greatly miss Amanda Goldrick-Jones, Merielle Kazakoff, and Stephanie Watterson, who graciously contributed their expertise and many hours of their time to the demands of Publications, Professional Development, and Webmaster positions. Thank you all for your work!
As is becoming tradition, we’ve asked this season’s exec to answer a few questions from a selection of options. Please click titles to learn more about the editors filling these important roles. [Ed note: As the new WCE managing editor, when returning executives could not provide new answers, I’ve had a little fun in their place.–AJG]

Freelance opportunities for comic book editors have spiked in recent years, both with publishers and independent creators. And even though it’s a specialized field of editing, thanks to this introductory session, you’ll be one step closer to understanding the charm and challenges of comics as a medium. Through samples showing simple to more complex errors, as well as comparisons of pre- and post-edited images and pages, you’ll develop an appreciation for the skills required of a comic editor—something you may be able to bring to a project in the future.

This month, Editors BC is proud to host presenter Nara Monteiro, who will discuss the role of freelance editors in the publishing industry as it continues to “gigify.” In addition to this presentation, members are warmly invited to our annual general meeting, where we will hold elections to fill some co-chair vacancies on the 2025–2026 Editors BC branch executive. More details below!
Here are the highlights from an Editors BC presentation and discussion on March 19, 2025, with guests Lana Okerlund and Rowena Rae, partners of West Coast Editorial Associates (WCEA). Lana and Rowena are active members of Plain Language Association International (PLAIN), Plain Canada, the Center for Plain Language, Clarity, and Editors Canada.

Group work sessions on Zoom? In-person social time? Guest speakers from editing niches you didn’t know existed? Just like the flowers blooming around us, Editors BC is looking to spring into a new season of connected community and fresh learning. This April, let us know what YOU would like Editors BC programs to look like in the future.
We’re hosting an informal brainstorming session where all members are invited to bring their seeds of creativity to the community garden. What is it you want to see more of at monthly meetings? What is it you want to see less of? This is your chance to voice a little bit of what you’d like to receive as an Editors BC member.
So bring your budding ideas (and even more spring metaphors) to the cross-pollination conversation with editing friends and colleagues and help our community flourish.
