Introducing the Editors BC 2020–2021 Executive

During our online chapter meeting on June 17, Editors BC held elections to fill positions becoming vacant on the executive.

Before we list the new executive, we’d like to thank outgoing executive members Alexandra Bogdanovic (programs), Maggie Clark (publications and West Coast Editor managing editor), Marianne Grier (past chair), Ellen Michelle (professional development), and Tiffany Sloan (treasurer) for their dedication to serving all Editors BC members.

We are also extending a warm welcome to new executive members Katie Beaton (publications and West Coast Editor managing editor), Tania Cheffins (treasurer), Joyce Chung (programs), Letitia Henville (professional development), and Marta Orellana (programs). These new executive members will take over from their outgoing counterparts on July 1.

In addition, Barbara Johnston is moving from volunteer coordinator to professional development, Jesse Marchand from branch chair to past chair, and Liz Warwick from communications to branch chair. Continue reading →

Join us in winding down the Editors BC 2019–2020 season with an online meeting to recognize our volunteers and to elect the 2020–2021 executive team. This is usually our wine and cheese event, so bring a beverage of your choice and get to know our incoming exec!

Editors BC Is Going Live!

As the executive of Editors BC, we know that we have members all across BC, as well as in Yukon, and we know that this geographic range means that a lot of our members don’t get the same access to Editors BC benefits as those who live in or near Vancouver. To address this gap, we have some initiatives in the works. For a start, we’re making our monthly meetings accessible to all our members through live streaming.

West Coast Editor publishes event and book reviews; member interviews; articles about editing specialties, tasks, and business practices; and more. Posts are typically 300–600 words long.

Join the Editors BC Executive Team!

We’re looking for an Editors BC member to take on the role of programs chair. The programs chair plans and hosts Editors BC’s general meetings (eight per year, from September to November and from January to May), with support from other executive members. Volunteering is a rewarding experience and a great way to get involved with Editors BC!

Here’s what past programs chair Frances Peck had to say about her experience in this role:

It’s an excellent low-pressure way to meet authors, publishing people, and other language professionals, especially valuable for anyone who doesn’t network easily. I also really liked having a direct say in the topics presented each month. Thinking up new and interesting subjects and presenters was a creative exercise that I truly enjoyed.

And here are a few comments from Iva Cheung, who served on the programs committee:

We made things easy for ourselves early on by creating templates for introductory and follow-up emails to speakers, meeting agendas, consent forms, and the like. We put in place a lot of this kind of infrastructure that we hoped would make the job easier for our successors.

The committee met over coffee at the end of each summer to brainstorm possible topics and speakers, and we never had a problem coming up with ideas—the Lower Mainland is brimming with talent and people doing and discovering interesting things.

Meet (and Join!) Your Professional Development Committee

Hello! I’m Lynn Slobogian (left), and this is Erin Parker (right) *waving in spirit*. We’re the 2016–17 co-chairs of Editors British Columbia’s professional development committee. I ran the committee last year as chair, while Erin joined last fall as a committee member. This year we’re working together to continue building our knowledge of members’ needs for professional development and finding new subjects and speakers to tantalize you!

Have you wondered what our committee does? Well, we plan, arrange, and follow up on the eight workshops we run each year, which are based on participant feedback. We also think of new ways to offer professional development that will serve a wider audience, create connections between peers, and broaden the branch’s financial base.

Editors Canada Mentoring Program Task Force

When you began as an editor, did you have great editors who showed you the ropes? Have you helped new editors with their editing and career questions? Mentoring can be a formal or informal relationship that helps newcomers to our profession hone their skills and make positive career moves. Building on a successful mentoring program in the Toronto branch and an inspiring session at last spring’s global conference, Editors Canada has struck a mentoring program task force to establish a national mentoring program. The task force is looking for seasoned editors who have taken formal or informal mentoring roles, as well as those with expertise in professional development and learning, to work toward this goal.

If you’re interested in joining the task force, please respond to the task force leader, Carolyn Brown, by January 4, 2016.
