Explore the social facets of realistic world building and how to craft relatable identity with Eliana West. During this seminar, Eliana will both expand on the ideas shared during Editors BC’s November general meeting, and dive further into characterization, from internal drives to external forces. Because realistic characters shape believable storytelling, this interactive workshop is for every fictive fanatic from beginning writers to experienced editors.
The Character Identity Workshop helps writers and editors deepen their understanding of how identity shapes character motivation, conflict, and story.
Led by diversity educator and author Eliana West, this interactive session provides writers with tools to create authentic, multi-dimensional characters that reflect the diversity around us. Through discussion and exercises, participants explore how race, class, gender, environment, and lived experience influence how characters see themselves—and how society sees them.
This workshop is ideal for fiction writers and editors of all levels seeking to build inclusive, believable stories. No prior diversity training is required. Recommended for anyone with basic fiction experience.
After this webinar, participants should be able to:
- Examine their own creative “default settings” and recognize bias.
- Understand how vertical and horizontal identities influence motivation and conflict.
- Understand how external factors can impact a character’s identity.
- Explore the concept of code-switching.
